  • Kingston DDR3-2000 Nehalem memory kit tested

Nebojsa Novakovic the Inquirer, Friday 5 December 2008. 08:10:00

First INQpressions Fast stuff, how much speed up?

Product Kingston HyperX DDR3-2000 Core i7 kit Web site www.kingston.com RIGHT AFTER the Core i7 launch, with its combination of a new three-channel configuration and memory voltage limitations, memory vendors started coming out with newly optimised "lower voltage yet decent speed 3-channel DDR3 memory kits for the new kid on the block. We've all seen in our first Core i7 965 Extreme test that the Qimonda kits nicely handle low latency CL7 DDR3-1333 speeds with full two DIMM loads on all three channels while keeping stock voltage. Those results were pretty impressive for un-tuned Auto settings and lowest possible voltage presets....

  • Itunes faces serious opponent

First INQpressions Nokia Comes with Music

Product: Comes with Music Supplier: Nokia Web: http://music.nokia.com Price: with 5310 £129.95 prepaid or Free on £25 pm contract with N95 8GB £40 pm contract IGNORE WHAT Apple fanboys might say, Nokia's Comes with Music presents a serious challenge to Itunes. The only real glitch is the Windows DRM rights management system it supports. In essence, buyers will pay for this service through the purchase of a 'Comes with Music' handset which are currently exclusive in the UK to the Carphone Warehouse. There's the Nokia 5310 which is available on prepaid or contract, or the Nokia N95 8GB Comes with Music edition which is only on contract....

  • Dell's Inspiron Mini 9 is a neat weee thing

    INQUIRER Labrat , Friday 24 October 2008. 15:33:00

Review Eee could have been a contender

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Price £299 Manufacturer Dell DELL'S INSPIRON MINI 9 is at the smaller end of the mini laptop or netbook spectrum, roughly the same size and weight as the Asus Eee PC 900 and smaller than HP's rival 2133 Mini-Note PC. It is a lightweight mini laptop that crams a PC into a tiny package that can be carried almost anywhere. Coming from Dell, this model is likely to attract more interest from business buyers, and exhibits a better build quality than some mini laptops we have seen. It has a clean design and, at just over a kilogram, is light enough to carry around....

  • INQ Nehalem system gets fired up

    Paul Hales , Monday 3 November 2008. 17:58:00

    First INQpressions Core Bli7mey

INTEL HAS LIFTED the lid on its hotly-anticipated 45nm chip branded Core Bli7mey and previously known here as Nehalem. The wibblesome web is awash with reviews of the platform Intel sent out to the eager hacks. We have one here. And eager we have been too. If not as eager as the many. Intel's reviewer's kit includes two i7 processors, the initial top-end 3.2GHz Core i7-965 Extreme Edition and the 2.66GHz Core i7-920 A further offering a 2.93GHz Core i7-940 will also go on sale with the other pair on November 16th. Or you can order yours here. Or here....

  • Sparkle tunes a souped-up Geforce 9500 GT

    Nebojsa Novakovic , Monday 3 November 2008. 18:42:00

    First INQpressions Sparkle Calibre P950

USUALLY THE TOP of the high-end crop is selected for advanced overclocking, tuning and such - this applies to graphics cards as well. Sparkle, the cute, plucky Nvidia partner, went for a different approach: how about bolstering a midrange Geforce 9500 under its Calibre OC brand, then add better cooling and some "enthusiast" gadgetry, and see how far it will fly? Packed in an unusual-looking, travel bag package, the card has the usual 512MB GDDR3 memory at 1.8Hz - the GPU runs at 600MHz. The Thermaltake Orb-type heatsink and fan grace the card, together with two DVI outputs - why not DVI plus HDMI here? After all, this card is more likely to go into a mid-range system connected to a HDTV set than a high-end PC....

  • Use your Nokia to avoid getting lost

    Tony Dennis , Tuesday 4 November 2008. 18:44:00

    First INQpression Nokia Maps 2.0

Product: Nokia Maps 2.0 Web: Here Maker: Nokia Price: From £6 for 30 days: £60 per annum NOKIA MAPS is best appreciated as a combination. Try it on the original version of the Nokia N95 and you'll yawn. Borrow an E66 from Nokia and it is an entirely different beast. It has quirks but it works. Well, just. The INQ was actually trying to review the E66 handset by itself. It's pretty much a me-too handset – until you switch on the GPS functionality. It then transforms itself into a half decent PND (Personal Navigation Device). So if you're skint, then your Nokia phone can replace a Tomtom navigator and an MP3 player....

  • Nehalem chugs along merrily at 4GHz with just a fan

    Nebojsa Novakovic , Thursday 6 November 2008. 17:19:00

First INQpressions HT disabled for baseline assessment

INTEL'S FIRST Nehalem CPU, the Core i7 uni-processor desktop entry, is now out for everyone to see - you saw roughly three thousand reviews coming out on the NDA lift date this past Monday. Something that bugged us a bit in those early benchmarks - in common with tests we've ran before on Intel's systems - were all using both the HT multithreading and Turbo functions. Yes, these are important benefits for many typical users, except say ray tracers where each thread takes up the whole core without much benefit from HT, or the real-time gang who prefers the CPU to run at a specific same clock - always....
